Finance Resources for Operators | Cash Flow Desk

About Cash Flow Desk

Cash Flow Desk is a finance resource for founders and operators at growing companies who need to understand the numbers without becoming accountants. We publish practical guides on cash flow management, finance automation, and building finance functions that actually scale. Real guidance on what to do, when to do it, and what tools to use at each stage.

Why We Exist

Most finance content is written for one of two audiences: people who want to learn accounting, or CFOs at companies with full finance teams. Almost nothing exists for the operator in between who just got handed the P&L and needs to figure out what to do with it.

That's the gap we're filling. We write for founders who inherited finance when the bookkeeper quit, operations leaders who suddenly own the budget, and finance managers at mid-size companies who are buried in manual work and don't have time to research better ways.

If you're approving expenses you're not sure are legitimate, answering board questions with data you don't fully trust, or spending 20 hours a week on finance when it should take 5, this is for you.

Who We're Writing For

We mainly write for companies with 50-500 employees that have outgrown basic bookkeeping but haven't built sophisticated finance operations yet. You're feeling the pain of manual processes, cash flow surprises, and tool sprawl. You know you need to modernize but don't know where to start.

What we cover: The practical stuff you need at your stage. Cash flow forecasting that doesn't require a finance degree. Automation that actually saves time. Tool comparisons that tell you what to use and why. Process guides that assume you're smart but new to this domain.

What we DON'T cover: Accounting fundamentals (debits and credits), personal finance advice, or CFO-level strategy for companies with full finance teams.

Our Approach

We focus on the 20% of finance knowledge that drives 80% of the value. The goal isn't to make you an accountant but to help you build systems that work, make better decisions about money, and know when to hire professional help.

We're opinionated about what works. We'll tell you when something is genuinely complex and when you're overthinking it. We provide stage-specific guidance because a 50-person company needs different advice than a 500-person company.

We acknowledge that finance is stressful. Running out of cash is scary. Not knowing what you don't know keeps people up at night. Our content treats that emotional reality seriously while staying practical and actionable.

Who's Behind The Cash Flow Desk

I'm Brian. I've spent the last decade building finance operations at growing companies and helping others do the same. Most of what I know came from getting it wrong first, watching month-end close turn into week-long fire drills, and building forecasts that fell apart the moment a big client paid late.

This site is what I wish existed when I was figuring this out. A finance library that tells you what actually matters at your stage, what tools to use and why, and how to build systems that won't break at your next growth stage.
